The end of an era, but the future is bright
2022 marked a pivotal year for Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust, with many ups and downs. A major loss to the Trust was the passing of our last founding member, Sister Marcellin Wilson.
A central pillar to our Trust and the reason we exist today, Sister Marcellin dedicated her life to fighting for social justice. Her vision was to establish a safe place for women who find themselves homeless, giving them a place to stay and providing assistance to overcome the major barriers they face. She felt moved to help people retain their dignity.
Today, Sister Marcellin’s vision remains stronger than ever as we carry it on into the future as our main focus.
Over the last twelve months, it has been a privilege to work alongside incredible wāhine at Te Whare Nukunoa – in-house Staff and our Board of Trustees. We saw an increased capacity of 9 more rooms added to our whare from our original 4, which are supported by The Ministry of Housing Urban Development (MSD). For us, the journey this year has been a mixed one. Although we are listed as a transitional housing provider, it is becoming widely known that the Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust far exceeds this service by providing a fully staffed, 7-days-a-week facility that offers comprehensive wrap-around services.
As I reflect on 2022, COVID brought upon uncertainty we couldn’t foresee – the impact it had on humanity as a whole and the changes to our everyday lives that we all had to endure, particularly the wāhine we have supported throughout this time. The adjustments we had to make as an organisation have been without a doubt one of the most challenging experiences we’ve faced thus far in our 9 years.
Acknowledging the traumas, experiences, losses and the many stories shared in 2022 was invaluable. Our kete (basket) of knowledge is full of wonderful and sad memories that will always be cherished. One of the biggest joys has been building our network, meeting many like-minded people throughout Wellington and beyond. It’s been wonderful to share the experiences with you.
On behalf of our team, we look forward to strengthening our relationships and establishing new ones as we embark on an exciting 2023.
In loving memory of Sister Marcellin Wilson, and her vision that paved the way for us.

With your basket and my basket the people will thrive.
